If you live in a University town like Grand Junction then you know all about a crazy time of year called Finals Week. It’s common to see college kids shuffling around town with messed up hair, dark bags under their eyes, and an almost visible dark cloud following them.
It was finals week last year when “Nicole” stumbled into our office in a full-fledged state of panic.
She told us that she had been working for months on an extremely important final project; trading a university social life for late night library visits, dorm-room cups of noodles, and reading until her eyes watered.
All of her notes, outlines and experiment results where on her MacBook, which apparently just copped an attitude with her. Instead of booting, it was just displaying an image of an outlined icon looking question mark. Nicole didn’t care about the photos, music or media; she just wanted her final project back. That project was two-thirds of her grade, and was due this week!
After calming her down we reassured her that we would do absolutely everything in our power to save her project, and potentially her GPA.
Once again pulling out the trusty “magical” diagnostic software we were able to confirm that her Hard Drive was failing. Fortunately, her data was still recoverable. We copied all of her project files, and even grabbed her pictures and music for her. Next, we popped a new hard drive and a fresh installation of OS X into her MacBook. After a quick transfer of all her data to the new drive, we were happy to get the MacBook back into Nicole’s trembling hands the very next day.
Nicole was so overjoyed to see that all her hard work was safe that the insisted the we let her treat us to coffee or tea. Never being one to turn down a nice cup of green tea, we accepted.
The Moral of the story is (1) having your important data backed up is always a good idea, and (2) No Ware always has your back.
