We’ve all heard that old saying: “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime”. The saying has stood the test of time because there’s a good deal of truth behind it. A couple months back we were able to prove that this saying was true.
Three brothers – one about 13 years old, one 15, and the eldest barely 18 – came into our office because the 15 year old brother was having a serious problem with his laptop. It wouldn’t start. They were just returning from a visit to the local “Geeks”, where they had been told that just looking at the computer was going to cost them a hundred dollars. That would be on top of whatever it cost it would cost to actually fix the problem. A rather intimidating price quote for these three younglings. As the eldest explained the problem to me it became clear he was fairly “tech-savy.” I could definitely relate to his frustration at not being able to diagnose and fix his brother’s laptop without having to ask for professional assistance.
It seemed that after an automatic Windows 10 upgrade they found themselves in a “boot loop” every time they turned the computer on. Sitting down with the eldest and hearing the troubleshooting steps he had already taken, it struck me as awesome that this client wanted to learn how to learn how to do Computer Tech work. From his description, to me it sounded like a hard drive failure. I took the laptop over to the workbench and let him watch as I set up and ran the test while explaining what I was doing and how it worked. The quick test quickly confirmed my theory.
After selling him a hard drive; for less than the cost the local “Geeks” wanted just to look at the laptop, I let him watch me install it. After that I taught him how to make a Windows 10 USB using Microsoft’s Media Creation Tool so he could learn to install the Operating System himself.
The next day the eldest brother gave the store a call to let me know how it went. Seems the Windows 10 installation worked perfectly, and his little brother was ecstatic to have his laptop back up and working. He also let me know there was another computer he was having trouble with, and would be bringing it in for me to take a look at.
